Geddes, N.Y. -- A roofing company in Geddes has agreed to pay $175,000 in penalties to settle allegations of workplace safety violations with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The settlement resolves four separate citations for fall protection violations issued against The Roofing Guys, of 3570 Walters Road, in 2016 and 2017. All of the violations were based on inspections conducted in 2016.

Among the allegations, OSHA said an employee of The Roofing Guys working on a bay window without fall protection at 2293 Markland Road in LaFayette fell 20 feet to the ground on Oct. 6, 2016. The worker suffered multiple fractures to both ankles and required hospitalization, OSHA said.

OSHA had previously cited the company for similar safety violations at job sites on Lathrop Drive in Marcellus and Ashfield Terrace in Onondaga.

Workers engaged in residential construction activities six feet or more above lower levels must be protected by guardrails, safety nets or personal fall arrest systems, OSHA said.

The agency also cited the company for failing to report the LaFayette accident within 24 hours of the worker's admission to the hospital.
